Better Late Than Never But Better Never Late

KOP legends Ian Callaghan and Gerry Byrne were picking up their World Cup winner’s medals today – more than 40 years late.

The Liverpool players were among the “back-up boys of 1966” who until now have not been recognised for their part in the country’s famous World Cup success.

But after a long battle they will now be honoured by Gordon Brown, at Downing Street.

Callaghan, a Toxteth-born winger, played in one of the early games of the 1966 tournament, but fell victim to a change of tactics.

Anfield left-back Byrne did not make it on to the field during the tournament.

The Prime Minister said: “I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Gerry Byrne, Ian Callaghan and the other players to Downing Street.

"It’s absolutely right that we recognise their role in England’s 1966 World Cup success, one of our finest sporting moments.

At least, they still alive and kicking to receive the honour. Huhuhu
